Ten commandments for travellers…

You already know I’ve decided to get rid of files and files of papers so my children won’t be left with a huge job of doing so later. Some are treasures — like this one. I don’t know where it came from or who wrote it, but I like it and decided to share it with you.

It you, like me, are biting at the bit to travel somewhere, anywhere, after all the long months of COVID:19, this may come in handy.

Ten Commandments for Travellers

1 Thou shalt not expect to find things as thou hath them at home for thou has left thy home to find things different.

11 Thou shalt not take anything too seriously … a carefree mind is the beginning of a vacation.

111 Thou shalt not let other tourists get on thy nerves, for thou art paying out thy savings to enjoy thyself.

Thou shalt not worry

1V Thou shalt not forget that thou dost represent thy country.

Gracias…

V Thou shalt not worry. One who worries hath no pleasure and few things are ever fatal.

V1 Remember thy passport so that thou always know where it is. A person without a passport is a person without a country.

V11 Blessed is the one who can say ‘Thank you’ in any tongue, for this is of more worth than tipping.

Roman Forum

V111 When in Rome, do as the Romans do. If in difficulty, use thy common sense and friendliness.

Pyramids of Giza

!X Do not Judge the people of a country by one person with whom thou hast had difficulties.

X. Remember thou art a guest in every land. Those who treat their host with respect shall themselves receive honourable treatment.

  1. Haha, real good one! I, too, have a hoard of paper cuttings even after discarding many. It’s so difficult to throw out the paper stuff because one lands up reading all again! Wishing you luck on your decluttering.

    • You cannot imagine how many papers I have, but it is true. Reading them is interesting, surprising, sometimes touching and often hilarious. It is certainly a big job and I feel very noble doing it. Love, Muriel

  2. Sage advice! As to getting rid of extra baggage, or decluttering, I can announce that upon completing our move to our new house we failed miserably. We had every intention to get rid of half our stuff, but it looks like most of it came with us.

    • I totally understand. It IS indeed a painful process. It hurts to toss certain treasures, but I must make life easier for my children when the time comes for things to really go. Having spent years as a columnist, I have oodles of papers. Yikes!
Enjoy each day in your new digs. Cheers, Muriel

  3. Muriel, you are so sensible … I liked #7 particularly: outgoing & friendly. I SO enjoy your ‘Views’ … keep it up, please.

  4. True 🙂 When we travel we do not keep thinking about home, we enjoy every minute and even if there are problems they are part of life. Thank you for sharing. And I think it is a wonderful idea to sort out the files and discard ones not needed.

    • It is certainly an interesting project, even though it is also, at times, painful to throw out stuff my kids won’t need. I have found a few treasures and it has been great to read them now. Thanks for reading. Stay well. Muriel
