You already know I’ve decided to get rid of files and files of papers so my children won’t be left with a huge job of doing so later. Some are treasures — like this one. I don’t know where it came from or who wrote it, but I like it and decided to share it with you.
It you, like me, are biting at the bit to travel somewhere, anywhere, after all the long months of COVID:19, this may come in handy.
Ten Commandments for Travellers
1 Thou shalt not expect to find things as thou hath them at home for thou has left thy home to find things different.
11 Thou shalt not take anything too seriously … a carefree mind is the beginning of a vacation.
111 Thou shalt not let other tourists get on thy nerves, for thou art paying out thy savings to enjoy thyself.
1V Thou shalt not forget that thou dost represent thy country.
V Thou shalt not worry. One who worries hath no pleasure and few things are ever fatal.
V1 Remember thy passport so that thou always know where it is. A person without a passport is a person without a country.
V11 Blessed is the one who can say ‘Thank you’ in any tongue, for this is of more worth than tipping.
V111 When in Rome, do as the Romans do. If in difficulty, use thy common sense and friendliness.
!X Do not Judge the people of a country by one person with whom thou hast had difficulties.
X. Remember thou art a guest in every land. Those who treat their host with respect shall themselves receive honourable treatment.
a very meaningful passage for travelers of any time any place! Thank you, dear Muriel!
And thank you Ellen: For reading and your comment. I hope it means that things are okay with you and yours. Fondly, Muriel
Haha, real good one! I, too, have a hoard of paper cuttings even after discarding many. It’s so difficult to throw out the paper stuff because one lands up reading all again! Wishing you luck on your decluttering.
You cannot imagine how many papers I have, but it is true. Reading them is interesting, surprising, sometimes touching and often hilarious. It is certainly a big job and I feel very noble doing it. Love, Muriel
Hi, Muriel. These are right on the money. Excellent pieces of advice!
I found them worth reading as well. If the pandemic ends, where would you like to go first??? Fond regards, Muriel
Hi. We’re on Cape Cod now, an area we keep returning to most years. Got here a few days ago. I’d like to visit my brother and his wife. They’re out west. And I’d like to go to somewhere in Europe.
So glad you managed to go somewhere you like. And hope you do get to see your brother soon and then go off to somewhere in Europe. Enjoy each adventure. Cheers, Muriel
I love thy travel ten commandments that thou has shared with all. This is a keeper, Muriel!
And I loveth the response you have givenith me. Chuckle. Hope you are having a great Thanksgiving. You are one of the things I am grateful for. Fondly, Muriel
I pretty much gave up traveling when I got my first horse, but if I ever take it up again, I will try to remember these words of wisdom!
No matter Susan: Whatever gives pleasure is great. Enjoy each moment with the animals you love. Hugs, Maughm
Sage advice! As to getting rid of extra baggage, or decluttering, I can announce that upon completing our move to our new house we failed miserably. We had every intention to get rid of half our stuff, but it looks like most of it came with us.
I totally understand. It IS indeed a painful process. It hurts to toss certain treasures, but I must make life easier for my children when the time comes for things to really go. Having spent years as a columnist, I have oodles of papers. Yikes!
Enjoy each day in your new digs. Cheers, Muriel
Thanks! Yes. I am doing the same with my archaeology periodicals, articles, notes, conference materials…
I knew YOU would understand. And since my children live in a different country, things will be difficult enough even with less papers to go through. It has been interesting though, I’ve enjoyed reading some treasures. All the best, Muriel
Love this! And shall forward it to my friends who are longing to travel again:)
So glad you like it Val: I certainly did. Stay well and go somewhere when you can. Cheers, Muriel
Muriel, you are so sensible … I liked #7 particularly: outgoing & friendly. I SO enjoy your ‘Views’ … keep it up, please.

Thank you so much Lynne: It is Thanksgiving and I am grateful for YOU in my life. Are you comfortable to meet for lunch or coffee? I miss you. Love, Muriel
True 🙂 When we travel we do not keep thinking about home, we enjoy every minute and even if there are problems they are part of life. Thank you for sharing. And I think it is a wonderful idea to sort out the files and discard ones not needed.
It is certainly an interesting project, even though it is also, at times, painful to throw out stuff my kids won’t need. I have found a few treasures and it has been great to read them now. Thanks for reading. Stay well. Muriel
Haha, this was fun to read advice and largely educational too! Definitely saving this for future reference!
So glad you liked it. I respect your opinion so it means a lot to me. Enjoy each day. Cheers, Muriel
My pleasure! You too!
Loved it!
Knowing that you do a lot of travelling, I appreciate your comment. Keep exploring. You’ll never regret it. Cheers, Muriel
Yes we travel a lot and actually believe in all those points you mentioned 😊
I know that because I always read your posts, which I find interesting. All the best…
Wonderful advice for now and future – thank you for taking the time to post this. 🙂
Wow! Susan will very much appreciate your comment. Advice? Chuckle. Thanks for reading. Cheers, Muriel
